18 more fantasy authors to read instead of J.K. Rowling

(Jumping off Ed's post, and with the caveat that I actually have nothing against Rowling or the Harry Potter books, having not read them.)

Paul Park
Jonathan Carroll
Geoff Ryman
Angelica Gorodischer
Kelly Link
Maureen McHugh
Sean Stewart
Caitlin Kiernan
Karen Joy Fowler
Holly Black
Stephen Millhauser
Kage Baker
Terry Bisson
Graham Joyce
Greg Frost
Avram Davidson
Diana Wynne Jones
Andy Duncan

(And it was hard to stop!)

Note: Just to emphasize again, I have nothing against Rowling, I just like making recommendations. Really.

Kage Baker is cute, but there's no way I'd pick her over J.K. Rowling. The Company series are popcorn - and not terribly well plotted popcorn either, whereas the Harry Potter books are so well plotted it's scary.

I could say a lot about Jonathan Carroll, but I'm holding my tongue.

And, as I asked Ed, isn't it possibly to read these authors and J.K. Rowling?

Well, I adore Kage Baker's work and think she doesn't get nearly enough credit for how hard what she pulls off is. Making smart fluff that effortlessly sails along isn't easy.

And, again, I have nothing against J.K. Rowling, nor do I think that Ed or me are going to keep anyone from reading -- I just like recommending things.

I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the new Rowling and I'm just as eagerly awaiting the new Jeffrey Ford novel.

Good on ya, Justin. I can't believe I left Jeff Ford off this list.

Reading this list is kind of like reading a list of eighteen more desserts to have instead of ice cream.

How did you stop? Just looking at the closest shelf, for things that are 'fantasy':

    GRRM.
    Mieville.
Moore (I am thinking Christopher, but if people want to take a run at 'Voice of the Fire' that's fine too).
    Tim Powers.
    Pullman.
    Matt Ruff.

H'mm...but what if these were actually ice cream toppings? There could be a whole new world of cross-over fiction right there! China Mountain Potter? Or maybe The Half-Blood Perdido Street Prince!

Or maybe this is another of my what my girlfriend calls "worst ideas ever"..
