book fever

One of the nice things about not checking the PO Box for a few days is the almost-guarantee of new books in it. Most interesting was a package from Basic Books with Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times, A Hundred & One Days: A Baghdad Journal, and A Complicated Kindness. I've been sort of skeptical about Bookmark Now, if only for the irrational reason that Kevin Smokler, its editor, has been everywhere of late. But it actually looks fantastic and I'm really excited to read it. They had me at Nicola Griffith and Kelley Eskridge, in other words.

Anyway.

It's good to have good things to read, because summer sucktastic TV is here, friends.

true, the sorry summer days of tv are here, the contender is over, frontline is lagging...but, if you're a slut for bad TV like me, one amusing offering is Beauty and the Geek, where some nerdy, brainy guys pair up with some (supposedly) good-looking women; the men try to improve the women's general knowledge, while the women try to make the guys hip to the pop culture scene
