memo to Alison Rowat

You are an idiot.

According to excited tourism officials, the planet's biggest sci-fi bash will bring 6000 visitors and £4m to the city. What the mad fools fail to appreciate is the risk involved in rolling out the red carpet to people who are, to a man – and they are all men – wired directly to Mars. Now, some would have us believe that an obsession with flying saucers and 50ft women in bikinis is all good, clean fun. A bit of a laugh. Better than being a football hooligan. True – but only up to a point, Lord Darth Vader. Having an interest in sci-fi is akin to dabbling in drugs. The soft stuff is fine now and then. Let no man be banned from spending his hard-earned cash on the latest edition of Which? Spaceship magazine if he so wishes.

Please let me know when you've covered her house in tin foil.

I actually think the tinfoil lightsaber test is a pretty good one. (Though being the one to apply the test doesn't say anything particularly good about you, either.)

And I think I'm going to start using the term "sci-fi" whenever possible.

Sci-fi, bleh. WE need something to identify us from them.

Here's the thing -- no women? in small doses?

Ignorance almost never works as humor.

Wow - you guys are sensitive. I'm afraid the world thinks you're a buncha nuts and that ain't gonna change as long as you keep passing e-notes to each other saying "Yeah it's just not right, we're nice people, we're not weird".

This stuff you're writing is just gonna maintain the general view that you're all dressing up as Spock and running about playing dungeons and dragons. If you're not all like that, bleating on blogging sites ain't gonna help you. Go and change people's views, but for the luva God do it in a grown up way.

Nothin’ more grown-up than anonymously telling other people to grow up.

Oooh...here we go. DM is clearly starting what passes for a grown up argument among the 'weirdo sci-fi nut brigade'. And by doing so makes my point so much better than I could ever do.

I'll repeat it if you didn't get it the first time, and it seems you didn't. The world thinks you're a buncha nuts, and bleating on this thread ain't gonna help you. Chance people's perceptions and for the luvva God, get a sense of humor.
